Selamat datang to RDC’s Aviation Emissions Report for May 2024, looking at global passenger related aviation emissions with a focus on the 25 largest markets by total emissions.
This month, we take a look at the popular travel destination of Malaysia.

Highlights from this month’s report include:
- Global passenger-related emissions in May 2024 were 66m tonnes
- Emissions year to date are 313m tonnes, 15m tonnes below the same period in 2019
- 8 of the 25 largest markets for emissions were up compared to May 2019 with Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Qatar showing the highest growth rates
Spotlight on Malaysia
- Passenger-related emissions from airports in Malaysia were 565k tonnes in May 2024
- Malaysia is the 25th largest country for emissions in May 2024, just under half of these emissions are covered by a compliance programme
- In the last 12 months, AirAsia operations combined (AirAsia and AirAsia X) have emitted over 2m tonnes of CO2
- As the primary gateway, Kuala Lumpur International Airport accounts for the highest emissions (5m tonnes of CO2 in the last 12 months)
