Highlights from this month’s report include:

  • Total global passenger-related aviation emissions estimated at 54.1m tonnes.
  • 38% of aviation emissions in January 2023 were covered by a compliance programme such as CORSIA or EU ETS.
  • The largest growth rates in the 25 largest emitting markets in January 2023, when compared with January 2022 were Thailand (+126%), Singapore (+111%) and Republic of Korea (+110%)
  • Just three markets (Turkey, Mexico and Vietnam) in the 25 largest emitting markets saw aviation emissions in January 2023 above January 2019 levels.

Spotlight on Germany – the 9th largest source of passenger related aviation emissions in January 2023.

  • In January 2023, passenger related aviation emissions from Germany were estimated at 1.24m tonnes, 31% below pre pandemic levels in January 2019.
  • 83% of these aviation emissions in January 2023 from Germany were covered by a combination of CORSIA and EU-ETS compliance schemes.
  • Inter-continental services are by far the largest contributor to Germany’s aviation emissions, followed by Intra-continental.
  • Lufthansa is the largest emitter of aviation emissions from the German market over the past 12 months, followed by Condor Flugdienst, United Airlines, Eurowings and Eurowings Discover.
